I make my bowls, plates, platters, cups, etc. so that these might bring moments of quiet beauty and ritual to a daily routine breakfast, to a lunch with friends, to an elegantly set dinner table. The colors and textures of my clays and glazes are of the earth and my design patterns are abstractions of what I observe in nature - of light & shadows falling through or upon grasses, leaves, pods, seed stalks; of the parched cracks in dried mud and tree trunks; of frost crisply outlining pine branches and bare shrubs. The accent tiles I make for kitchens, bathrooms, patios, etc. feature these patterns and are as such quite similar in appearance to my square plates; they can be interspersed with plain commercial field tile in diverse ways and hopefully bring the tranquility and inspiration of raw nature into living spaces. My pieces are made of high-fire stoneware (white, gray, red, and brown stoneware bodies) or porcelain, meaning that they are fired at 1300 degrees C./2400 degrees F. This entails, first, that my ware is quite sturdy and resistant to the knocks of daily use and, second, that the glazes merge with the clay bodies to a much greater extent than at lower temperatures, melting into multi-layered colors and textures. I make all my own glazes and engobes; all are non-toxic. You may put my bowls, plates, platters, cups, etc. into the dishwasher, but I recommend not using any pottery in the microwave oven.
Use to enjoy!
